Is Riley a girls or boys name?

I really like the name riley for a boy, but I keep hearing it as a girls name.. which is it more commonly used?

Is Riley a girls or boys name?
Riley is an irish surname in origin. It was a man's last name the way Courtney, Ashley, Sydney, Tiffany and others have been (over time) used as girls' first names.

I have heard both and Riley is a unisex name for this reason.

For boys the traditional way of spelling Riley is Riley.

For girls...Rylee, Ryleigh, Riley, Ryely, Rilee, and so on...

The surname spelling is Reilly as in O'Reilly.

Famous boys with the name: in the movie Natinal Treasure there is a male character named Riley. In the movie Elizabeth Golden Age, there is a man named Raleigh.

Famous girls with the name: Riley Keough, grandaughter of Elvis Pressley.

It is a very cool name and is very popular right now. Most irish names are becoming more and more popular in our time. Very trendy for some reason... Goodluck!! Peace ;)
Reply:Riley was initially a boy's name, a shortened "nickname" version of Randall. Eventually, the name Riley remained without the proper, "Randall", (the more common nickname for Randall now being "Randy", also now used as a unisex name)

Only in recent years has the name Riley been used for girls and is now a popular unisex name.

I have a cousin named Riley, a male cousin. :)
Reply:well, both technically. I think a lot has to do with the spelling, though too.

Using boy names for girls really takes away a lot of the masculinity and charm of the name for a boy, imho. I personally don't like that trend, but I don't plan to be part of it either.
Reply:It's a gender bender name. It doesn't really matter if you use it for a boy or a girl. I would suggest if you use it for a boy to have a super masculine middle name and if you use if for a girl to have a super feminine name. That way when looking at the name on paper you know if its a boy or a girl. :o)
Reply:I've never met a boy with that name. I know 3 girls named Riley, someone with the last name of Riley, and my female dog is named Rylee.

So.... a girl's name in my opinion.

Although it's popular for both genders according to SSA.
Reply:I like Riley for a girl but not for a boy

Yeh i think it can be used for both genders, if you like it go with it it's a pretty name whatever the sex
Reply:I am not sure- that in itself says to me that it is a unisexual name.

My son's name is Lucas Reilly Ourlastname, but that is in tribute to a last name.
Reply:When I hear Riley I think of a girl, I guess because I have seen more girls with this name.

There is a name close to Riley that more boys use which is Ryland.
Reply:I've heard it used as both a girls and a boys name, but I like it better as a boys name.
Reply:I know both girls and boys but when I first hear it I tend to think more boy but everyone I talk to thinks girl so....maybe not a real manly boy name but cute as one none the less!!
Reply:i work with preschoolers and kindergartners all the time. ive heard riley used as girls names alot more than boys names. but it works with either!
Reply:I know both a guy and a girl named Riley. I first heard it as a boys name.
Reply:It's neutral, like

Alex

Macenzie

Jordan

It's fine for both. I think it's cuter on a girl but it's also sweet on a guy.
Reply:My sisters name is Riley, spelled Reily, but my ex boyfriends name is Riley. Its transgender and can go both ways
Reply:I like Ryleigh or Rylie for a girl and Riley for a boy.

But I know more girl Ryleighs than boys
Reply:I think it's both boy and girl's name I know of a boy with this name. My friend likes it as a girls' name.
Reply:*angry voice* It's more commonly used as a sur name !!
Reply:It's both.

I'd say spell it Riley and Rylie or Ryleigh for a girl

鈾?Taylor
Reply:It's a boy name. But some reason stupid parents are naming their daughter that name.
Reply:It sounds like a boys name to me.
Reply:Both, but I hear of more girls with that name.
Reply:Riley sounds like a girl name..
Reply:neutral!
Reply:I'd say that is more likely to be a girl's name. /:

What boys name do you like better?

Smith Arthur Erickson

or

Cooper Smith Erickson?

or any, variations, opinions, suggestions, comments? if you dont like any names please explain.

What boys name do you like better?
I like Cooper Smith.. flows nicely
Reply:I like Smith as a first name but not when paired with your last name. It makes them both sound plain.

I say Cooper Erickson is the way to go. I would pair it with a middle name that is not typically a surname though. That would solve the law firm issue.
Reply:Sorry, I don't like either. Smith sounds like a lastname and Arthur is too old-fashioned and reminds me of Horace or something awful like that. Cooper sounds like a dog's name, not a little boy's name.
Reply:Cooper Smith Erickson

Cooper is cool

Cooper Erickson
Reply:Cooper!!

Smith is the most common surname. Ever.

Cooper is a great name.

:)
Reply:Smith seems more like a surname to me. It works okay as a middle name, though. Between the two you listed, I like Cooper Smith Erickson the best.
Reply:They're all last names! Coop may be a chicken's living quarters and a first name, but it's all too common as a last name as well. Sorry
Reply:Cooper Smith Erikson.

I don't like Smith Arthur at all.
Reply:Cooper Smith just sounds nicer than Smith Arthur. I really can't see Smith as a first name, it just doesn't work for me.
Reply:none. they're hideous.
Reply:Cooper Smith Erickson. But I'm not going ot lie they both sound like a law firm.
Reply:either wat about arthur erik smith
Reply:I'd go with Cooper Smith Erickson. The other one sounds like 3 last names.
Reply:Aren't Cooper and Smith supposed to be last names? I hope Erickson is your last name too...
Reply:Cooper Smith sounds good.
Reply:I like Cooper but not Smith, good luck!
Reply:Why last names for first names? Sorry, not keen on that particular trend. I like Arthur though:) Cute! Bye:) xxxxx
Reply:Cooper Smith ALL the way!
Reply:Um..I don't really like either of them! How about, Austin Samuel!
Reply:none of them. they are all old names
Reply:none actually sorry

they sound like you're trying too hard to make him seem intelligent

Which boys name do you think is best?

I have two possible boys names, i know which is my favourite i would just like others opinions and pleas any suggestions. Thanks.

So far all i have is

Ellis

Which boys name do you think is best?
James - great.

Ellis - ok.

Riley - not keen.
Reply:I like Riley James
Reply:Tom

Rich
Reply:I like Riley James, or Riley Ellis would be nice. I have always liked the name Cambell and Jasper.
Reply:Ellis. I know a few girls called Riley and it could cause trouble if he gets teased for having a "girls" name. Ellis is lovely!
Reply:Ellis
Reply:Oh they are both lovely names. If I have to pick then I would pick Ellis but Riley James is lovely too.
Reply:i like both but prefer riley james
Reply:I love Riley-James although I'm sure DH would call him RJ.
Reply:Riley James
Reply:I like Ellis.

Edward is my favourite name.
Reply:I like riley thats nice, also dylan, rees or max get a baby names book this helped me decide my childrens names
Reply:they both lovely but i think riley james is my favourite xxx
Reply:I like riley best
Reply:out of the 2 i like ellis....but my choice would be sam or blake
Reply:ellis james is good, or ellis matthew, ellis cameron. or even james ellis
Reply:Ellis....it is less common than Riley...also, there are about 6 kids around here (all girls) named Riley.

EDIT: I would have a better suggestion if I knew the last name but I understand why you wouldn't want to put that on here....the number of syllables the last name has will effect my answer.....but:

Ellis Montrose

Ellis Edward

Ellis Linole

Ellis Emery - FAVORITE
Reply:James or jimmy. Andy or anthoney. Austin is nice too!
Reply:I think I like Ellis, I also love James, not so hot on Riley.

How about James Ellis?
Reply:riley james...def
Reply:I like Ellis the best, or what about:- Thomas, Cain, Fin, Zack, Oliver (James), Luke.

I like lots of names but it depends if you like traditional or something a bit different. One name i do like which is different is Chi, i am gonna call my baby this if i ever get a boy.
Reply:Riley James is far more unique than Ellis I have two sons and there are lots of boys named Ellis - mind you when our first son was born we called him the name we had chosen but it just didn't suit him so we changed it to another that was not a favourite but we really like it now -GOOD LUCK
Reply:I like Riley James! It's a great name.
Reply:Riley James is an excellent name. Strong, but flows at the same time.
Reply:i wud go for ellis coz then he wont gt mixed up with the girls then cz riley is really popular now! u might want suming different!
Reply:i like both but prefer Ellis
Reply:James is very nice.

What about something nice to go with it?

Rohan?

Thomas?

William?

Rodhri?
Reply:I think you should go with Riley Ellis-but of course, everything depends on how it flows with the last name, since your son will keep that all of his life. Flow is very important. It needs to sound good when you say the first and last, and also when you say all three. And make sure the initials do not spell or suggest anything dirty or funny. You know, like Preston, Michael, Spears...i.e, P.M.S.....
Reply:I LIK EELLIS JAMES BETTER. RILEY SOUNDS TOO FEMININE TO ME. MAYBE ITS BC ITS MY NEICES NAME. LOL.

BUT IT S A GOOD NAME.

I WOUL DSTILL GO WITH ELLIS. I THINK THATS ADORABLE AND I HAVENT HEARD IT BEFORE.

GOOD LUCK ADN OCNGRATS!
Reply:I dont really like Riley (sounds too girly) James Ellis is nice!
Reply:I like Ellis James, it is unique, and he won't get mixed up with the girls in his class whose names are also Riley.

I am having a little bit of trouble coming up with a boys name for my baby, what should I do?

My boyfriend is arguing with me over the baby's name. I want to name the baby after my dad and my step dad who passed away two years ago. The name I have picked out, which everyone in my family, including my friends, love is Samuel Connor Grady Napier. I mean come on the baby is getting his last name at least I should get to name it without him fussing over it right???? What should I do????

I am having a little bit of trouble coming up with a boys name for my baby, what should I do?
pick one of your dads, as first name, his dads name as middle name,

the traditional way is first son gets paternal grandfathers first name, maternal grandfather middle name....

second son gets any name of choice....

Reply:You need to compromise. You can't have it all your way and the only way. I agree iwth your boyfriend about the double names. Pick the one most sentimental to you - either your father or your step father and pick that as either the middle OR first name - not both for both. You will probably have more kids and can use the other name then. Be reasonable.
Reply:whoe.... pick something easy.

don't give him a 4 or 5 foot long name. he won't be able to write it in school

samuel conner napier is beautiful.

whats he fussing about? i love it.

What is a good name for a dwarf hamster that is a boys and girls name?

My dwarf hamster is black and white...

What is a good name for a dwarf hamster that is a boys and girls name?
hammy or jellicle.
Reply:Thanks for the points, Hammy is a good choice, most of the hamsters I had as a child were called Hammy. One we named King Hammy because he ruled over all. Report Abuse

Reply:I added Jellicle because of the poem "Jellicle Cats" by TS Elliot.

Jellicle Cats are black and white,

Jellicle Cats are rather small;

Jellicle Cats are merry and bright,

And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul.

But your hamster might not appreciate being named after a cat. ;-) Report Abuse

Reply:How about Jamie? or Oreo?
Reply:I can't really think of a name, but I just wanted to know why it had to be a girl AND boy name. Do you not know the sex of your hamster? The pet store or breeder you got it from NEEDS to know whether it's a boy or a girl! If not, they can't separate boys from the girls at 4 weeks of age, and the females may be pregnant! The males will fight with each other, too. Go back to the store and demand that they tell you what you bought! Then check for yourself: the boys will have 2 small bumps under the tail.
