What about the boys name Ari?

It is Hebrew for Lion. Does it sound too nickname-y to be given as a formal name? Do you like the spelling Arie or Ari better?

What about the boys name Ari?
I think a lot people would assume that Ari's a nickname for Arnold or something and it IS a little lacking in substance. The alternate spelling for Ari is Arieh rather than Arie and I'd prefer the former also because it's less feminine. Arieh also has more substance than Ari. By the way Ari is also an Old Norse name (meaning eagle) AND an Armenian name (meaning brave). That's three pretty special meanings! If you like the etymology there are male names with the meaning 'lion' in other languages also. Such as:

Asad [Arabian]

Aslan [Turkish]

Leo [Latin] which I think is lovely!

Llewellyn [Welsh]

Sher [Iranian]
Reply:I like it. I would spell it Ari. Arie might be easier to pronounce but it looks more nickname-y.
Reply:I like the name Ari and no i don't think it sounds like a nickname.
Reply:I prefer Ari for a nickname, but that's just me...
Reply:Ari isn't good, sorry! Especially for a boy!
Reply:i don't like it..

sorry
Reply:I think it sounds too feminine to be a boy name.
Reply:ARI sounds good. And no, it doesn't sound like a nickname. I think it is adorable.
Reply:Arie.

%26amp; I love the name for a boy.
Reply:Ari is a great name!
Reply:I like it. Spell it Ari.

It is a pretty common name in NY, particularly in Jewish families.

People in other parts of the country tend to mispronounce it. It is said R-ee, not AIR-e.
Reply:As a former teacher you have to remember that as children grow up their names are sometimes used to tease them, so make sure it doesn't rhyme with something that might embarass them. Ari does sound like a nickname. Some people may think it is short for Aristotle???
Reply:in all honesty u can name your child whatever u want to...I like the spelling of Arie because it makes it easier to pronounce it correctly...though it does have a nickname characteristic- perhaps u could make the name longer and say Arie for short?
