Is Riley a girls or boys name?

I really like the name riley for a boy, but I keep hearing it as a girls name.. which is it more commonly used?

Is Riley a girls or boys name?
Riley is an irish surname in origin. It was a man's last name the way Courtney, Ashley, Sydney, Tiffany and others have been (over time) used as girls' first names.

I have heard both and Riley is a unisex name for this reason.

For boys the traditional way of spelling Riley is Riley.

For girls...Rylee, Ryleigh, Riley, Ryely, Rilee, and so on...

The surname spelling is Reilly as in O'Reilly.

Famous boys with the name: in the movie Natinal Treasure there is a male character named Riley. In the movie Elizabeth Golden Age, there is a man named Raleigh.

Famous girls with the name: Riley Keough, grandaughter of Elvis Pressley.

It is a very cool name and is very popular right now. Most irish names are becoming more and more popular in our time. Very trendy for some reason... Goodluck!! Peace ;)
Reply:Riley was initially a boy's name, a shortened "nickname" version of Randall. Eventually, the name Riley remained without the proper, "Randall", (the more common nickname for Randall now being "Randy", also now used as a unisex name)

Only in recent years has the name Riley been used for girls and is now a popular unisex name.

I have a cousin named Riley, a male cousin. :)
Reply:well, both technically. I think a lot has to do with the spelling, though too.

Using boy names for girls really takes away a lot of the masculinity and charm of the name for a boy, imho. I personally don't like that trend, but I don't plan to be part of it either.
Reply:It's a gender bender name. It doesn't really matter if you use it for a boy or a girl. I would suggest if you use it for a boy to have a super masculine middle name and if you use if for a girl to have a super feminine name. That way when looking at the name on paper you know if its a boy or a girl. :o)
Reply:I've never met a boy with that name. I know 3 girls named Riley, someone with the last name of Riley, and my female dog is named Rylee.

So.... a girl's name in my opinion.

Although it's popular for both genders according to SSA.
Reply:I like Riley for a girl but not for a boy

Yeh i think it can be used for both genders, if you like it go with it it's a pretty name whatever the sex
Reply:I am not sure- that in itself says to me that it is a unisexual name.

My son's name is Lucas Reilly Ourlastname, but that is in tribute to a last name.
Reply:When I hear Riley I think of a girl, I guess because I have seen more girls with this name.

There is a name close to Riley that more boys use which is Ryland.
Reply:I've heard it used as both a girls and a boys name, but I like it better as a boys name.
Reply:I know both girls and boys but when I first hear it I tend to think more boy but everyone I talk to thinks girl so....maybe not a real manly boy name but cute as one none the less!!
Reply:i work with preschoolers and kindergartners all the time. ive heard riley used as girls names alot more than boys names. but it works with either!
Reply:I know both a guy and a girl named Riley. I first heard it as a boys name.
Reply:It's neutral, like

Alex

Macenzie

Jordan

It's fine for both. I think it's cuter on a girl but it's also sweet on a guy.
Reply:My sisters name is Riley, spelled Reily, but my ex boyfriends name is Riley. Its transgender and can go both ways
Reply:I like Ryleigh or Rylie for a girl and Riley for a boy.

But I know more girl Ryleighs than boys
Reply:I think it's both boy and girl's name I know of a boy with this name. My friend likes it as a girls' name.
Reply:*angry voice* It's more commonly used as a sur name !!
Reply:It's both.

I'd say spell it Riley and Rylie or Ryleigh for a girl

Reply:It's a boy name. But some reason stupid parents are naming their daughter that name.
Reply:It sounds like a boys name to me.
Reply:Both, but I hear of more girls with that name.
Reply:Riley sounds like a girl name..
