Reply:Most are Latin or Latin-derived.
"Marius" was the name of the Roman general who founded the Republic's professional army, 100 years before the emergence of the Roman Empire.
"Julius," of course, was the name of Caesar.
The list is really substantial, and also come out of Spanish, Italian, and French (all Romance languages based on Latin).
Some saints' name in the Latinate form include "Johannes" (John), "Petrus" (Peter), "Marcus" (Mark), and "Paulus" (Paul). These name forms are more popular than many realize - they are quite common in Scandinavia, Holland, and Germany.
Have fun looking up names, and pay attention to not only the meaning but also some famous people who bore the names. You might think twice, for example, about using "Paulus" - that was the surname of a top Nazi general.
Reply:We have one little boy at daycare whose name is Justus (they pronounce it U-stis). I'm not that fond of it. I believe it's German.
Reply:Mateus (Matthew in Portuguese), Matteus (Matthew in Italian), Matias, Gustavus, Gus, Pius, Stanislavus, Elias
