I mean...since its normally supposed to be kun, why would somone use chan?

-chan is basically used for children or girls.


if you follow this rule, you don't need to worry of insulting anyone or making a mistake.





BUT, depending on the person and relationship some, especially girls, will call men by chan. Another reason is that some male names sound better with chan than kun. whichever, they are used only in close friendly relationships. (Some people also call male friends with chan because of the funny gap it makes with that person's rough, male looks.)


For example: because I have the habit of calling my husband by -kun, friends around do the same. But my friend, who married her high-school sweetheart, calls him by "nickname"-chan, because of that almost everyone around calls him that too.


another example could be: my eldest son's name sounds better with -kun, so most people don't call him -san or -chan, but -kun. But my second eldest son's nickname fits well with chan, so he is often called so.


In the end, -chan and -kun simply show how close you are to the person.
